Weight loss has always been a very slow, drawn out process for me. If I just try to ‘behave myself’ with what I eat I have found that I may be able to lose about 2 inches off my waist within 6 months. Now this hasn’t been a huge issue for me in the past because I haven’t really had a lot to lose. However since having my babies I’ve got a lot of extra weight I want to lose.
Supplementing with DIM
So I’ve been going through a process of trial and error trying out supplements to see if anything would help me lose the weight quicker. And recently I’ve stumbled across a great product called DIM (diindolylmethane). It helps support healthy estrogen metabolism. Without getting overly technical basically it converts the type of estrogen that is associated with hormonal issues (e.g. mood swings, acne, etc) into another form of estrogen that is associated with lower body fat and higher muscle mass. It also blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen.
The precursor to DIM – indole-3-carbinol is found in small amounts in cruciferous vegetables (like cabbage, cauliflower, etc). But you would need to eat a huge amount of these vegetables to realise significant benefits. So that’s where supplements come in. I’ve been taking the Seeking Health brand of DIM + 13C and I really love their product (I’ve been taking their multivitamin for years now). Plus their product contains a higher level of active ingredient than lots of other brands.
Since taking DIM I’ve been losing an inch off of my waist consistently every month. I was losing weight anyway without taking DIM, but the speed and consistency of weight loss have really improved since adding it in. I have also found that my cycle has become more regular as well.
A Word of Warning
Initially when you start taking DIM many people can experience some detox symptoms like headaches, brain fog and tiredness. I certainly felt pretty below average the first few days I took it. But within about a week I was feeling better again.
